This admission season, the University Grants Commission imparts a much-wished fact test to prospective students and their mothers and father. It released a listing of 23 ‘faux universities’. Unfortunately, they are all practical, although unrecognized below the UGC Act. Most of such universities are from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. These include Vishwakarma Open University for Self-Employment, Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Indian Institute of Science and Engineering, Delhi, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University. This isn’t always the first time those colleges have been featured in the UGC’s annual listing of fake universities. Of the 23 universities, 14 had been at the UGC’s listing from 2005 — including Commercial University, United Nations University, Vocational University, and ADR-Centric Juridical University in Delhi. The United Nations, Vocational, and Commercial Universities appeared in the fake universities’ final 12 months. Several universities keep claiming that the UGC may accept them on their websites. Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society, Karnataka, St. John’s University, Kerala, and Raja Arabic University, Maharashtra, have been operational since 2005, notwithstanding the UGC’s tick list. The University Grants Commission set up an anti-malpractice mobile in 1995 to register court cases on setting up fake universities. While the board has filed FIRs for numerous establishments, many remain operational.
